VIII All-Russian Scientific Conference “Ecological problems of the northern regions and ways to solve them”

On June 24-29, 2024, the VIII All-Russian scientific conference with international participation “Ecological problems of the northern regions and ways to solve them” dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the 35th anniversary of the Institute of North Industrial Ecology Problems KSC RAS will be held in the city of Apatity, Murmansk Oblast.

Preliminary agenda:

  1. Terrestrial ecosystems under the natural and anthropogenic factors.
  2. Current trends in changes in Arctic aquatic ecosystems.
  3. Technological aspects of environmental protection and technosphere safety of the Arctic. New solutions to minimize the technogenic impact of mining enterprises on the environment.
  4. Study and conservation of biodiversity of taiga and Arctic territories.
  5. Protection of natural resources. Development of a network of special protection natural areas in the North-West of Russia and their recreational use.
  6. Climate change in the Arctic: current state and prospects.
  7. Man in the Arctic: socio-economic, socio-cultural, and medical aspects.

The conference will include several roundtable discussions on topical issues. Suggestions for organizing the discussion can be sent to the organizing committee. The issue of holding the following roundtable discussions is currently being considered:

  • Carbon in terrestrial ecosystems: assessment methods and monitoring. Implementation of the key innovative government project “Unified National System for Monitoring Climatically Active Substances” (Carbon Rhythm);
  • Diatoms as an object of applied scientific research and development;
  • Citizen science in natural sciences and social studies.

The final topics for breakout sessions and roundtable discussions will be determined later based on an analysis of applications received for participation in the conference.

The working languages of the conference are Russian and English.

Key dates:

January 15, 2024 – end of pre-registration and abstract submission. March 15, 2024 – notification of acceptance of abstracts and the proposed form of the report. May 15, 2024 – distribution of the third information letter and preliminary conference agenda.
