At the CO2 conference in Brazil, the first data of the RITM Carbon Consortium on soil respiration in Russia were presented

The International Carbon Dioxide Conference, ICDC11 was held in the Brazilian city of Manaus. Its participants discussed key scientific problems of climate change, regulating functions of forests, changes in biodiversity in the modern world, and much more.

Alexander Ivanov, a member of the RITM Carbon Consortium, researcher of the Institute of Geology and Nature Management FEB RAS, Ph.D. in agricultural sciences, presented at the conference the first data on soil respiration obtained during the creation of the Russian Climate Monitoring System (RCMS). The measurements were made in 75 different ecosystems of the main bioclimatic zones of Russia in 2023.

‘At the current stage of work, it is important that the Russian Federation is no longer a white spot on the world soil respiration map. This means that our national and global assessments of carbon cycle elements are becoming more accurate and the interpretation of the results more reliable,’ said Alexander Ivanov.

Manaus was not chosen as the conference venue by chance. This city is located in the centre of the Amazon lowlands and the world’s largest forest area, which is rightly called the lungs of the planet.
