Scientists of the Federal Research Center for Agroecology of the Russian Academy of Sciences spoke at the round table meeting “Climate projects in the field of forestry: Results and future prospects”

On October 17, 2022, the Federal Research Center for Agroecology of the Russian Academy of Sciences discussed activities within the framework of the implementation of the key innovative government project on the topic “Assessing humus accumulation in forest reclamation soils of the Russian Federation, carbon accumulation in soil and phytomass of protective forest plantations. Developing methods for designing a monitoring network to study the carbon balance and the sequestration potential of agroforestry landscapes in the southern part of the Russian Federation. Designing the structure of a database of the carbon balance and the sequestration potential of agroforestry landscapes in the southern part of the Russian Federation. Framing a database on carbon pools and greenhouse gas flows, the carbon balance and the sequestration potential of agroforestry landscapes”, short name CARBON.

Deputy Director – Head of the Center for Combating Desertification Aleksandr Kuzenko, speaking to the members of the Academic Council, highlighted issues related to the legal framework in the implementation of projects on carbon balance, and also spoke about his visit to the Voronezh State Forestry University that is working to create both a climate research site and a carbon test site. The Forestry University hosted a round table meeting entitled “Climate projects in the field of forestry: Results and future prospects”, wherein the discussion focused primarily on ways to implement projects to create carbon test sites. The event was also attended by Aleksandr Koshelev, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Head of the Laboratory of Agrotechnologies and Farming Systems in Agroforestry Landscapes.

As part of the CARBON key innovative government project, six climate research sites will be created based on branches of the Federal Research Center for Agroecology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. To date, the data sheets are in the making for each facility.
