The Government of Karelia hosted the first meeting of the Environmental Council, a new body established earlier this year with the aim of ensuring environmental security in the Republic of Karelia. At the meeting, representatives of regional authorities, the Ministry of Natural Resources of Karelia, other relevant institutions and local businesses discussed the issues related to the protection of forest and aquatic ecosystems and the implementation of the National Project “Ecology” in Karelia.
The Director General of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences Olga Bakhmet, a member of the Council, reported at the meeting on the initial results and current status of the ongoing research conducted by the Karelian scientists within the framework of the federal project “The National System for monitoring the dynamics of climatically active substances in terrestrial ecosystems of the Russian Federation” (RITM-carbon). During the initial stages of the project in 2023 KarRC RAS scientists implemented the necessary methodological tools and created new testing areas in Karelia, which are currently being used to create simulations and prognoses.
