Selection of soil samples to assess carbon content and reserves in the territory of the Kivach Nature Reserve

From July 31 to August 5, 2023, scientist of the youth laboratory of the Center for Forest Ecology and Productivity (CEFP RAS)Anna Narykova, participated in the field works of the Forest Institute of the Karelia Scientific Center of the RAS to arrange a test site for MISSIP aimed at studying of carbon pools and greenhouse gas fluxes in the territory of the Kivach Nature Reserve (Republic of Karelia, Kondopozhsky District). Together with the employees of the Forest Institute of the Karelia Scientific Center, the participants laid soil sections in the pine and fir forests and collected soil samples to determine the chemical composition (C and N content, pH, etc.) and the density of mineral horizons and forest floor reserves.

Anna Narykova expresses her sincere gratitude to the colleagues from the Forest Institute of the Karelia Scientific Center of the RAS for their hospitality and training in field methods for studying soils in Karelia.

The field works were funded by the youth laboratory of climate-regulating functions of forests of the Center for Forest Ecology and Productivity of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
