Abstract

Objectives. Developing a methodological approach to assessing carbon stock deposited in turf developments of Western Siberia based on the analysis of available publications and archive materials with account to the possibility of quickly re-estimating carbon stock when new data becomes available.

Methods. Analysis of historical data on carbon stock and methodological approaches to assessing its reserves in wetland ecosystems of Western Siberia. Using data from the Turf Development Cadastral Register of the Tomsk Oblast and archive materials on specific deposits to test existing methodological approaches and develop an optimal approach for assessing carbon stock in turf developments of Western Siberia.

Basic findings. A significant lack of representative data on the stock of organic carbon (Corg) in the turf developments of Western Siberia has been revealed. The necessity of revising existing indicators of density and Corg, averaged for different types of swamps, is substantiated in order to clarify the reserves of carbon deposited in turf developments in this region. The authors propose a method for calculating carbon stock in turf developments based on regional registers and archive materials of geological exploration of turf developments in Western Siberia and a calculation algorithm with account to the specifics of the available information.

Conclusion. Large-scale analytical studies using a unified method shall be conducted and an open database of Corg stock in organic matter of different types of turfs in Western Siberia shall be created to clarify carbon stock in turf developments of Western Siberia. Furthermore, it is necessary to determine the content of inorganic carbon in high-ash lowland peats. The authors propose a methodological approach to assessing carbon stock based on the maximum use of regional cadastral data and archive materials of geological exploration of turf developments as the most efficient approach.
